Healthcare reform expands RAC program

On Jan. 10, MGMA urged the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to lessen the potential burden of the expanded Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program in a letter that proposes standardization. The RAC program was expanded Dec. 31, 2010, to include Medicare parts C and D and Medicaid as part of the Patient Protection and Affordability Act. Previously the RAC program reviewed services provided under Medicare parts A and B.

Read our comment letter , which encourages CMS to incorporate the lessons learned from the Medicare demonstration project by standardizing the Medicare and Medicaid RAC programs.

MGMA also joined 80 medical organizations in a request for state-run RACS to operate like Medicare RACs, instead of giving states broad discretion to create them.

We continue to work with CMS to reduce the potential burden of RAC visits on physicians and will revise our education materials, solicit member experiences and advocate for appropriate changes based on those reports.
